If you know your dogs, then you know that Germany is home to at least 20 dog breeds. Some of these breeds make for perfect hunters and guards with their ferocity while others are just cute and cuddly. Here is a list of some of the most amazing German dog breeds!

Affenpinscher

The name of this dog actually comes from the German word for monkey.  This dog is known for being curious, stubborn, brave, adventurous, and joyful. In addition, it is regarded as a quiet breed.

Dachshund

Dachshunds go all the way back to the 18th century when they were bred as hunters on the ground and underground. This hunting aspect is even shown by its name, which means badger hound. The elongated body and sturdy head are some of the features that make it suitable for the hunt underground. Today, it is a family favorite because of its desirable traits like intelligence and braveness.

Doberman

The Doberman is a majestic breed that goes all the way back to the 19th century. The large-sized dog can have a number of colors such as black, white, fawn, white, red, or blue-gray. The trapezoidal head contains a high level of intelligence, braveness, and energetic temperament. They are not that great with children because they lack patience and need a lot of training.

Great Dane

The Great Dane is also a big dog that was bred in the 17th century to hunt big prey such as wild boar. The German name for this dog is “Deutsche Dogge.” Interestingly, this once aggressive hunter for big prey is now a big and gentle friend who loves playing, showing affection, and is extremely patient. Sure, it takes up a lot of space but it is definitely a family dog.

German Shepherd

There is no way that a list of German dogs does not include the German Shepherd. Resembling a wolf in appearance, this dog is perfect for a range of things. You could use them as guard dogs or simply as a companion. They are strong, highly intelligent, and they are easy to train. Originally, it was bred as a sheepherder.

German Spaniel

This breed is extremely popular in Germany and less so in other countries. They are primarily kept as hunters due to their stamina, strength, and versatility. The breed is not that popular as a pet because of its strong drive to hunt prey. However, those who own them have little trouble with their grooming and maintaining their health, which is why they have longer lifespans.

Poodle

Poodles are the epitome of elegance, brains, and pride, which is why they are very popular in dog contests. Surprisingly, they were actually bred as retrievers in water for waterfowls. The job required a lot of jumping and obviously swimming. The modern poodle, however, is the perfect family dog.

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a breed between German Shepherds and Roman dogs. T were primarily used for herding livestock, as guard dogs, and for pulling meat carts. In recent times, they have been used as search and rescue police dogs as well as family pets.
